C1/11: Malay Language Classes for International Students

During the next two weeks, there will be Malay Language classes for the international students. This is to help them cope with the rigors of clerking patients in Malay. This classes are a first in Clinical School and the Student Council hope that you guys can make it.If the reception isn't good, this initiative will no longer be continued in the future. The classes will start on the 15th of March (Tuesday) from 8-9pm. Location is outside the student lounge. There are plans on holding it on Thursday as well. Please pass the word around to our international friends, just in case they don't see this post.

Kampung Angkat Project

Greetings,

A minimum of one community visit is required throughout your two years in Seremban clinical school. There will be three kampung angkat visits this year and 30 students will be recruited for each visit. The next project is mid-April, but the date will be confirmed later. Once the details are finalised, we will start recruiting students whereby you can submit your name to your respective posting leader. We will be visiting a palm tree estate, Kampung Tekir in Labu, N Sembilan which is 20 minutes drive away. Students will have to car pool & the driver can claim mileage for the trip.

Also, please note that 20-30 students can join the jungle-trekking & 2-day stay in Kampung Tekir somewhere in August. Accomodation & food will be provided. More details will be given in due time. It would be a great opportunity for students to experience living the "kampung" life.

Dear batchmates,

According to AAD, those who are intending to swap their posting seats must provide AAD with an appeal letter with both your names, id number, groupings as well as both your signature. With regards to the swapping, we are allowed to exchange with the members of the opposite genders so its all green for that issue.

Tomorrow(1/3), there will be an order form for the name tags to be passed around. Please write whatever name you would like for it to be printed on the tag. As a reminder, this will be the tag you'll be using throughout clinical years so please put in to due consideration with regards to the name. We'll be collecting rm5 from each person for the tag and to make it easier, we'll be making it compulsory to get. So ya, if got any issues with it...you guys can approach me about it and etc. Payment of money can be settled with Elly. If by any chance we get the tags for less than rm5, we are planning using the remainder for either a batch based activity or maybe just buying extra food for us(pizza anyone?) for the orientation night.

Hey dears,

This list was sent to me by a senior and as a Semester 6 student my batchmates and I had found it very useful. It is basically up to you to choose which books you want to buy - you can still ask other seniors (and if you have also been given a list it would be great if you forwarded it to me so I can put it up)! :)

1. Family Medicine

1. Murtagh's General Practice (huge textbook, a lot of people use it, still used by GPs in clinics)
2. Rakel's Essential Family Medicine (some seniors just photocopied sections which were important)

! Very importantly for Family Medicine, you need to read the Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) for Malaysia (available online on the Academy of Medicine website) Actually this is applicable to all postings, but especially true for FM. You will be questioned on the guidelines often.

2. Surgery

1. Essential Surgery by Burkitt et al (huge textbook, colourful diagrams, used widely the world over, even some established surgeons are still using it and it is highly recommended)
2. Intro to Signs & Symptoms of Surgical Diseases by Browse et al (something like Macleod's/Talley's but specifically for Surgery, also can be used for internal medicine/family medicine, also highly recommended)
3. Manipal Textbook of Surgery (a lot of seniors use it - apparently it's very good)
4. Bailey & Love's Textbook to Surgery (recommended by some lecturers, but quite huge, you can borrow from the library)

3. Internal Medicine

1. Kumar & Clark's OR Davidson's (EITHER ONE WILL DO! BUT MUST HAVE ONE!)
2. OHCM 7/8th Edition (to be carried to wards for quick reference, very useful)
3. Express Revision for Short OSCEs by Chew Nee Kong, some Dr from UM (awesome revision book for practising OSCEs!)
4. Again, read CPGs!

According to seniors there is no rush buying books because Phase 2 is totally different! Just soak in the atmosphere and settle down properly first.

Clinical school Seremban will be starting on the 28th February 2011 for batch C1/11. Dress code is formal, as per phase 1 IMU Bukit Jalil. However, you'll be needing short-sleeved labcoats, which is available from Henry (Emo bookstore in IMU Bukit Jalil) or Kamal bookstore (opposite HKL). In Kamal the price of the labcoat is RM 45 (Kamal bookstore's labcoat is better as the material is thinner and there are more pockets and a place to hold the tendon hammer). It is best to buy between 2-3 lab coats per person. Registration is on 28th February starts at 9am. The whole week from 28th February to 4th March will be orientation week, which will be full of important briefings about clinical school.

There will be a "White Coat Ceremony" which is the highlight of the week to mark the transition from medical students to student doctors and it is very IMPORTANT. You need to have your labcoats ready by then. I will keep you further notified about this.

IMU Clinical school has limited parking spots available therefore it is advisable to car pool with your friends/housemates. Orientation night is on the following week, Monday (07/03/2011). Please do not skip lectures/activities without any valid reasons & do abide by the dressing code and professional conduct in clinical school. Dear Student,

There is a further delay of the payment from PTPTN for another week as informed by PTPTN to Cik Noorliza (IMU-Student Services).
Due to that finance has agreed to extend the due date for student affected from the delay in PTPTN payment.

The earlier extension given was Monday, 18 October 2010, and now has been changed to Monday, 25 October 2010. Kindly be advised that no further extension will be granted regardless the fund from PTPTN received or not.

Please ignore this due date, if the 2nd installment of your fees is not due yet by 25 October 2010.

this is regarding 2 models in CSU- the one to check for fundal height and what not, and the PAP smear model thingy too...

pls be reminded that you can only use these models between the hours of 2-5pm, and you will need to be supervised by a Lecturer (but if our lecs are not free- then a sister will supervise the session)
if im not mistaken you can only use the models for about 30 minutes each, and you need to book those models in advance (the day before), so that sister can get ready the model,and allocate you a room to practice in...

if you are confused..... just ask sister lar k :)

1) BRING YOUR LAB COAT
Without which, you will be denied entry to the hospital and forced to go back where you come from (where your lab coat is) and go back KKB.

2) TRY TO WEAR FLATS
(Females and some selected Males)
Heels make noises. Noises are bad to patients.

3) BRING YOUR LAPTOP (& THUMBDRIVES) IF YOU HAVE ONE
Dr. Lim explicitly told me this because she would want us to do case reports in computer from the very first day of posting and present later in the afternoon. To present, we need to do it digital-style, hence the laptop. Security is something I have yet to confirm with Dr. Lim but well. just carry wherever we go lo if security's bad.

4) YOUR LOG BOOK
Bring it. If you dont have it, *breathes* I'll pray for you.

5) SCHEDULE

The attached cost list is only an estimate, for the most accurate reflection of the cost of living and the tuition fees, please refer to the relevant PMS Medical School site.

For example, if I'm interested in Dundee, I'd check with University of Dundee School of Medicine site @ www.dundee.ac.uk/medschool. Under 'Learning Medicine in Dundee' and international students, I'd be able to find the link for tuition fees which will link to the Registry site with the course fees for all schools. My point being... Dundee's annual fees for Medicine Clinical is £23,000. If I were to take the intercalated BMed it'll be an additional £11,300.

It'll be best if you can post whatever information you find here, on the tagboard --> Then it might save each other some trouble :)

Hello there! If you have not checked your IMU Mail....

As the message title goes, here's the long awaited pre-matching to start the ball rolling.

Pre-matching is essentially a tool to let everyone know which universities we've each have our eyes set on. (Err, sort of anyway.) It's the students' way to "out-smart" the PMS matching.

PMS matching works simply: the students rank PMS, PMS rank students, and the computer analyses the data and give the "best possible combination". That is to say, it will try to please everyone.

So, there's no point for 20 students to fight for the 4 places in a University knowing that there's an equally good option no one is opting for. Thus the goal is to arrange our options smart, so that everyone will be happy. Case in point, for M206, Nottingham was newly listed as a PMS school. A few students noticed that no one was opting for it and thus switched their first choice to Nottingham. Needless to say, they got their first choice and they were happy. Also, for that reason, the pre-matching will be repeated so that we can switch our choices after we know each other's choices. Until everyone is happy :)

Just a note, please use your full (or more explicitly, real) name. This exercise will only work if everyone is honest about their choices. You only need to put up to your third choice, but if you'd like to put more it's fine :)

IMU ‘SAVE OUR EARTH’ POSTER COMPETITION 2010

Rules and Regulations

Entry deadline: 26th MARCH 2010!!!

All entries must be placed in a special submission box outside SRC room by 26th March 2010.
Prizes will be awarded to top 3 places (1st, 2nd, 3rd place) and 5 consolation prizes are also given.
Contest is open to all students, staff and lecturers of IMU. Fee of RM 3 per entry will be imposed as well. (Please pass the money to Isabell Tam – 012 6783156 / Joyce Chieng – 017 8538588 before you submit the entry)
Poster can be based on ANY environmental issue.
All media of art are accepted EXCEPT digital media.
Participants are encouraged to include an original slogan or title on their posters. At a minimum, students should include the theme title – “Save Our Earth” on the poster with participants’ details: student’s name, batch, ID and contact number on the back of the entry. Participants need to prepare a brief description of poster not exceeding 50 words on a paper (preferably type-written – Times New Roman, Font 12)
Utilization of eco-friendly materials in poster-making will be a bonus in judging criteria.
The size of the artwork should not be smaller than a drawing pad size (11” X 15”).
Poster orientation: Landscape or portrait is acceptable.
Each person is allowed to send in a maximum of 3 entries. (No individual entry may win more than one prize)
Only original work will be considered.
Certificates will be given to final winners. Winners’ posters will also be exhibited for an extended period after the ‘Save Our Earth’ Week.
No responsibility is assumed on our part for late entries or damaged posters. Incomplete entries or entries that do not comply with the above rules & regulations will be automatically disqualified.
All entries submitted will become the property of IMU and will not be returned. Submission of an entry to this contest shall be deemed as acceptance of all artwork requirements and shall constitute granting permission to IMU to publish, display, and/or produce the entry for sale. IMU reserves the right to alter submissions in any way.
Judges will determine the final winners and all decisions are final.

Final results will be released and SRC representative will award the winners on the same day, which is 2nd April 2010 during closing ceremony.

1. Communication Skills Training

Since Communication Skills training has been taken over by CSU and is no longer under the Behavioural Science department, all Communication Skills sessions are compulsory, especially those during Rotations (Semester 3&4). With immediate effect, attendance will affect students EOS paper eligibility. (So please, do not skip those classes to study for exams.)

2. Pathology Lab
Dr Sri Kumar has kindly requested that students attend all designated Pathology Lab sessions as Lecturers feel that the time and effort put into teaching at Lab sessions are wasted as very few students attend.

3. Alumni Talk (USMLE)

Justin from M207 will be coming to IMU Bukit Jalil to give a short talk about taking the USMLE exams after Semester 4 lectures (about 6pm). For those interested, the talk will be held at the discussion rooms at Level 2 (near AAD).

There will only be a maximum of 60 tables at the Royale Chulan so table/ticket sales will work on a first come, first serve basis. The first step is to recruit at least 20 members inclusive of committee members for those who are interested. Dear all,

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Professor John Paul Evangel Judson as the new Dean of Medical Sciences for a period of 3 years. Professor Judson will take over from Professor Yasmin with effect from 1 February 2010. As Dean of Medical Sciences, Professor Judson will provide the leadership for the implementation, quality assurance and continual improvement of all programmes under the School of Medical Sciences.

On behalf of IMU, we wish to express our deepest gratitude to Professor Yasmin for her leadership role and contribution to the IMU during her tenure as Dean of Medical Sciences from September 2005 to January 2010. Professor Yasmin will be going on leave for 6 months from 1 February 2010. She will be moving on to a new appointment upon her return from leave. The new appointment will be informed in due course.

We congratulate Professor Judson on his new appointment and hope that everyone will extend their fullest cooperation to Professor Judson in his new role.

UK-Malaysia Symposium on Cancer Drug Discovery and Delevopment

Date: 24-25th February 2010

Venue: Subang Jaya

This Symposium aims to bring about the discussions between UK and Malaysia researchers on the development and use of various target-specific anti-cancer assays to study Malaysia’s natural products. Introducing the local research communities to research groups in the UK who specialize in various target-specific cancer activities may lead to collaborations that result in discovery of more effective anti-cancer therapeutics based on natural products.

Admission to the symposium is FREE OF CHARGE but due to the limited number of places available, all participants are requested to register early and before 5th FEBRUARY 2010 via fax or email or mail. Participants are also strongly encouraged to submit an abstract to showcase local research. A small number of poster prizes and outstation travel bursaries are available based the merit of the submitted abstract.

A 250 words abstract must be submitted by e-mail before 5th January 2010.

As you would know, Dr Ian Brown is awesome and we all want him to stay. Apparently so do the Deans & faculty(lecturers), and everyone has been giving him quite some pressure to be a permanent lecturer in IMU. However, Dr Brown said he is unable to give an answer at the moment as he has his family & all in Glasgow. However, he will keep the option in mind :) so keep your fingers crossed!

acoustic nite... the stage is set.....

the M&P club is having an acoustic nite on the 27th october, at dance studio from 7pm onwards.... :)

The event is free-of-charge and is not limited to the M&P club members and so is open to all faculties in IMU. Activities include open-mike sessions for acoustic jammings and also live, unplugged performances from a few well-known performers in IMU.

It's that time of year again! We had a Night of Enchanment for the last IMU Ball that took place, who gets to determine what lies in store in 2010?

Join the IMU-Ball Core Committee for the IMU Ball 2010. The SRC 2009 is electing THE people to be a part of the IMU Ball Committee. Interviews for positions in the committee will be conducted from the 12th-16h of October. It is your chance to determine the nature of next year's IMU Ball, the theme, the performances, and just everything there is about it!

3. ANU CVS Demostration

Australian National University is coming over on 27th Oct 9am to 1045am to do a CVS demonstration. Only 10 places allowed. First come first serve!

4. PTPTN

PTPTN officers will be coming on 15 October 2009 to collect the loan documents from students whose loan applications have been approved in August 2009.

For students whose loan applications have just been approved in October 2009, they can submit their documents on that day if they can have the documents ready. Otherwise, the PTPTN officers will come again to collect the documents. We will make another announcement once the date is confirmed.

5. 1st Inter-Varsity HIV Summit 2009

Dialogue Session with Dr Isurujith from Asia-Pacific Early Career Network in Public Health (APECNPH)

APACPH (Asia-Pacific Academic Consortium for Public Health) is an international non-profit organisation registered in Australia, comprising many of the largest and most influential schools of Public Health in the Asia-Pacific region and dedicated to improving professional education for public health. Launched in 1984 with just five members, APACPH now has over 55 members throughout the Asia-Pacific region with Regional Offices in Bangkok, Beijing, Brisbane, Hawaii and Tokyo. Through its activities, the members aim to tackle the unique public health challenges of the Asia-Pacific region, for example specific health issues of workers within the growing economies of the region.

The Asia-Pacific Early Career Network in Public Health (APECNPH) aims to support students and early career professionals in the field of public health throughout the Asia-Pacific region. The network will provide a forum for discussion, promote understanding of global public health issues and provide guidance specifically for individuals in the early stages of their career. The network is supported by the APACPH.

On the 5th of October (Monday), Dr Isurujith who is a delegate of APECNPH from Sri Lanka will be coming to IMU to talk to 10 medical students about Early Career Networking. The details of the session are :
